Stuffed animals are companions, best friends and keepsakes, all wrapped into one special package. Some stuffed animals are collector's editions and require very special care. Others hold extreme sentimental value; therefore, special care methods are vital to the long-term preservation of the animals. Here are some tips on how to care for your stuffed animals while preserving their original condition.

Cleaning your stuffed animals with a washcloth

The safest and best way to clean a stuffed animal is to use a soft, slightly damp rag on the surface of the animal. Wipe in a gentle, back and forth motion-being careful not to fray the animals fur as you clean it. In most cases, this method works to remove dirt from the surface and is safe for both old and new animals.

Using the washing machine

Machine washing is the next best cleaning method; however, it is risky to throw a fragile stuffed animal in the wash without knowing if it can handle the more rugged cleaning method. To use caution, always wash the animals on their own with the wash set to low or gentle. Once clean, use a little spray-on fabric cleaner to give the animal a clean smelling coat and allow to cool dry. Never place a stuffed animal in the dryer or the hot sun as this can cause damage to the fur.

For long-term storage, place your stuffed animals in air-tight containers or bags to keep them dust and mite-free. Keep antique or very old stuffed animals up and away from small children and out of reach of actual animals to protect them.
